Benjamin Hanil Song, a 32-year-old military veteran and former U.S. Marine Corps Reservist, has been captured by the FBI after being on the run for nearly 11 days. Song was wanted in connection with a violent, coordinated attack on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in Alvarado, Texas, that happened on July 4, 2025.

Song was arrested on Tuesday afternoon in Dallas by the FBI’s Dallas Field Office. His capture ended an intense multi-agency manhunt, which began after a group of about 10 to 12 people carried out an ambush-style attack at the Prairieland Detention Center, a federal ICE facility located just south of Fort Worth and Dallas.

During the attack, several suspects opened fire on law enforcement officers, including two federal correctional officers and one Alvarado police officer. Song is accused of using two AR-15-style rifles to shoot at the officers. According to a criminal complaint obtained by Fox News Digital, one of the assailants shot the Alvarado police officer in the neck. Another suspect fired dozens of rounds at unarmed correctional officers who had stepped outside the facility during the chaos.

Ten of the attackers were arrested at the scene shortly after the incident, but Song managed to escape into nearby woods and disappeared. His disappearance led the FBI to issue a Blue Alert on July 9. A Blue Alert is a public safety message sent to phones and media outlets to notify people when a suspect who has seriously harmed law enforcement is on the loose and considered dangerous.

The FBI also offered a $25,000 reward for information that would lead to Song’s arrest and conviction. His name and photo were widely circulated by law enforcement agencies and media outlets across Texas.

On Tuesday, July 15, after an 11-day search, Song was finally taken into custody. The Alvarado Police Department posted a message on Facebook confirming the arrest, although officials have not released details about where or how Song was captured.

Song is now facing three counts of attempted murder of a federal officer and three counts of discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, according to the Alvarado Police Department. These are serious federal charges, and he is being held in the Johnson County Jail with no bail set as of Wednesday morning.

In a statement, FBI Dallas Special Agent in Charge R. Joseph Rothrock praised the combined effort of law enforcement agencies, media, and the public in locating and arresting Song.

“The FBI has worked tirelessly to arrest everyone associated with the shooting at the Prairieland Detention Center,” Rothrock said. “We would like to thank all the entities that publicized this case and assisted in our efforts to successfully locate Benjamin Song.”

Rothrock added: His arrest is the result of our determination to protect not only the community, but also our law enforcement partners that were the targets of a coordinated attack. We have said it before, the FBI will not tolerate acts of violence toward law enforcement and will thoroughly investigate anyone that commits these types of offenses.”

At this time, Song is the 14th person arrested in connection with the attack. Authorities have not said if additional suspects are being sought or whether more arrests are expected.

The Prairieland Detention Center, where the ambush took place, is a federal facility used to hold people in ICE custody. Law enforcement has not shared any possible motive for the attack or explained how the group organized it. They also have not given an update on the injured officer’s condition.

The investigation is ongoing, and federal prosecutors are expected to pursue charges against Song and the others involved. If convicted, Song could face life in prison due to the severity of the charges.
