Musk’s xAI to launch Macrohard, an AI software company

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence business, xAI, is launching an ambitious new project—Macrohard—a direct response to Microsoft’s dominance in enterprise and consumer software. Dubbed with a playful twist on Microsoft’s name, Macrohard is billed as the world’s first software company operated exclusively by artificial intelligence, with no human coders or engineers in its development workflow.

The bold initiative was publicly announced by xAI co-founder Yuhuai Wu in late September 2025, calling for engineers to join a new team focused on building “computer control agents” capable of developing software autonomously. Musk, whose posts reach over 200 million followers on X, amplified the message, framing Macrohard as proof that AI alone can replicate—and potentially surpass—the output of traditional software companies.

In a company-wide meeting, Musk detailed his vision for Macrohard: multiple AI agents collaborating 24/7 to maximize productivity and efficiency, all overseen by “maximally truth-seeking” AI systems. The timeline is aggressive. Wu stated the goal is to have both Macrohard’s core software and Grok 5—xAI’s next-generation model—fully operational by the end of 2025. Training for Grok 5 began in September 2025; Musk has claimed it could achieve artificial general intelligence.

xAI is already demonstrating its technical capability. Its latest model, Grok 4, achieved industry-leading scores on advanced AI benchmarks, including a 15.9% result on the challenging ARC-AGI-2 test for abstract reasoning. Behind this effort is the Colossus supercomputer, powered by over 100,000 Nvidia GPUs, providing the computational muscle for rapid AI advancement.

Despite this momentum, Microsoft remains a formidable opponent. The company’s Windows and Office products generate hundreds of billions in annual revenue, and its AI initiatives—especially through its partnership with OpenAI and deployment of Copilot—have made Microsoft a top choice for enterprise AI projects. Industry data shows Microsoft is involved in 62% of new generative AI enterprise projects and maintains a 45% engagement rate for its cloud AI offerings—well above its general cloud market share.

Bold Claims, High Stakes

Musk’s advocacy for Macrohard is rooted in his belief that software companies can—and should—be fully automated, since they don’t manufacture physical products. This challenge to Microsoft is more than symbolic: it’s a test of whether AI can replace the traditional software development process entirely. With xAI’s aggressive hiring, rapid model development, and Musk’s history of disrupting established industries, Macrohard could mark a turning point in the evolution of the global software market.

Highlights

  • Macrohard is xAI’s AI-only software company, a direct challenge to Microsoft’s dominance.
  • Elon Musk and xAI leadership are recruiting engineers to build fully autonomous computer control agents.
  • Grok 5, targeting artificial general intelligence, is slated for completion by the end of 2025.
  • Grok 4 already leads on key benchmarks, powered by a massive Nvidia GPU supercomputer.
  • Microsoft leads in enterprise AI adoption, with deep integration of generative AI across its ecosystem.
  • The race is on: Can AI truly replace traditional software engineering? Macrohard is betting yes.

For the tech industry and observers worldwide, Macrohard is not just another startup—it’s a live experiment in the future of software, with implications for jobs, competition, and the shape of AI-powered enterprises.
